Faculty Notes: July 2012

Joyce J. Elam, executive dean, was chosen to receive the Education Award from the Coral Gables Community Foundation. The theme of the 21st anniversary celebration, at which the awards will be presented, is Club Monaco.

School of Accounting

Manny Pravia (MST ’92), adjunct, was quoted in The JOBS Act of 2012: Tools, Tips, and Tactics, published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Abhijit Barua and Antoinette L. Smith were promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure.

Department of Decision Sciences and Information Systems

“Health information technology education: prescription and dosage for the IS community,” an article by Monica Chiarini Tremblay, assistant professor, has been accepted for publication in Communications of the AIS, a high-quality journal.

Debra VanderMeer was promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure.

Department of Finance and Real Estate

William Hardin, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, and Ken H. Johnson, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, were quoted in “South Florida home values show ‘dramatic’ increase, but rollercoaster may not be over,” in the Palm Beach Post on July 24, 2012.

Xiaoquan Jiang, Edward Lawrence and Zhonghua Wu were promoted to the rank of associate professor and awarded tenure.

Department of Management and International Business

Members of the department had a strong presence at the Academy of International Business (AIB) annual conference, “Rethinking the roles of business, government and NGOs in the global economy,” held in Washington, DC July 30-July 3, 2012. Mary Ann Von Glinow, professor and Knight Ridder Eminent Scholar Chair in International Management, is AIB president; Galen Kroeck, professor, served on the Haynes Prize Selection Committee; and Sumit Kundu, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, organized the Doctoral Consortium. The best paper from each of the 12 Conference Tracks was selected for consideration for the Temple/AIB Best Paper Award, which was awarded to Sokol Celo (PhD ’11) and Aya Chacar, associate professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow, for “Country relatedness and international coherence.” A number of faculty members and PhD students presented during the conference and faculty members chaired many of the sessions. Faculty participants included Jose de la Torre, professor emeritus; G. Ronald Gilbert, clinical professor; Nathan Hiller, associate professor; William Newburry, associate professor and SunTrust Bank Professorship in International Business; Ronaldo Parente, associate professor; David A. Ralston, professor and Knight Ridder Center Research Fellow; Donald Roomes, senior instructor; and David Wernick (PhD ’11), senior lecturer.

Jerry Haar, professor,  was quoted in the article “South Florida a hub for Hispanic-owned businesses,” which appeared in Hispanic Business.com on July 17, 2012.

Doreen Gooden and Clifford Perry were promoted to senior instructor, and Nathan Hiller was promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure.

Department of Marketing

“A comparative analysis of the effects of different forms of team diversity on global virtual team performance,” co-authored by Peter Magnusson, assistant professor, was one of twelve finalists for the Academy of International Business’ (AIB) Temple/AIB Best Paper Award.

Ron Mesia, adjunct professor of supply chain, co-presented “Key performance measurement and lean enterprise initiatives impact on defense contractors” at the Intellectbase International Consortium Academic Conference in San Antonio, TX; the conference took place May 31-June 1, 2012. The article was published in the Journal of Accounting Information Sciences & Leadership (IJAISL).

Kimberly Taylor, associate professor and Macy’s Retailing Chair, was quoted in “Advertising’s looking more like us: Companies hope older models lure older customers,” which appeared in the Sun Sentinel on July 5, 2012.

Nancy Rauseo was promoted to senior lecturer and John Tsalikis, BMI professor of marketing, was promoted to professor.
