Wells Fargo leadership and support is recognized at classroom renaming reception.

A new sign marks the classroom . . . a reception marked the event . . . and an important partnership is celebrated.

A classroom in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU) has been renamed the Wells Fargo Classroom, reflecting the fact that Wachovia is now Wells Fargo. Executive Dean Joyce J. Elam took the opportunity to welcome corporate leaders for a renaming reception on June 5, 2012.

Visitors included Frank Newman, regional president, South Florida, along with Jane Gilbert, community affairs officer, South Florida; and Jorge Villacampa, Community Bank president, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Villacampa also serves as a member of the Dean’s Council.

A reception celebrated the newly renamed Wells Fargo Classroom and the long-standing relationship of the company to FIU and FIU Business.

Elam enumerated Wells Fargo generous support.

At the reception, Elam welcomed the group, which included almost 50 faculty members and students, and spoke of the importance of the university’s 27-year relationship with the corporation.

“Wells Fargo, the Wells Fargo Foundation, and their predecessors have significantly contributed to the development of FIU,” Elam said. “The corporation’s commitment has been realized through service on advisory boards, recruitment of graduates and substantial financial contributions.”

Elam pointed out that Wells Fargo support has been instrumental in a wide range of college efforts, including construction of the College of Business Complex and a Business Ethics Scholarship.

“Wells Fargo representatives have donated their time and expertise by serving on the FIU Foundation Board of Directors, the President’s Council, the College of Business Administration’s Dean’s Council and the Finance Advisory Board,” she said.

Numerous FIU students and graduates have been recruited for internships and career opportunities at Wells Fargo offices, Elam added.

Newman’s remarks also praised the partnership and emphasized how helping education fits with Wells Fargo’s philosophy and mission.

“FIU graduates many people who stay in South Florida and that’s critical to the success of our community,” he said.

The Wells Fargo executives also toured places of interest on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

“I always enjoy my time on campus,” Gilbert said. “Exciting changes and growth are taking place at FIU and the people of Wells Fargo are pleased to partner with the university.”
